Five Newark area organizations including the University of Delaware were recently awarded state grants to help them develop or expand their recycling programs.

State grants for recreational projects for Washington County communities totaling $964,000 were announced Friday.

Three local groups have received grants for environmental projects.Officials with SCA Tissue awarded the grants, totaling $7,500, to fund the three projects as a part of SCA’s commemoration of America Recycles Day, which was Saturday.

The following cities and counties will receive grants as part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

Woods Charitable Fund Inc., a private grant-making foundation, announced grants to 12 groups totaling $211,500.

The prize patrol was out in full force Thursday morning, making surprise visits to Plano schools and awarding 56 grants totaling $66,000 to Plano ISD teachers.

Friday morning, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean was on hand to help announce anti-foreclosure grants for the mid-state.

Two area programs were recently awarded grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Quincy Community Action Programs will get $57,065 and the Plymouth Redevelopment Authority will get $52,500 under HUD’s Housing Counseling Program.

The Northern Marianas is eligible for federal grants related to the military buildup in the region under a bill President George W. Bush signed on Wednesday.
